The presence of blue-green algae has been observed at the Belwood Lake, Conestogo Lake and Guelph Lake reservoirs.

Hot summer days are great for spending time outdoors, but also create the perfect conditions for algae to grow and bloom in large bodies of water like the Grand River Conservation Authority’s (GRCA) Belwood, Conestogo, Guelph, and Woolwich reservoirs.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is required to submit an implementation report for Water Management Plans (WMP) every five years as part of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) requirements under the Maintaining Water Management Plans Technical Bulletin. The GRCA has three dams that require WMP’s – Shand Dam, Guelph Dam and Conestogo Dam. Recent Implementation reports were completed for Shand Dam in 2022 and Conestogo Dam in 2023. The previous implementation report for Guelph Dam was completed in 2019, with the current report approved by MNR on August 8, 2024.

Haldimand County and the County of Brant have renewed support for their respective Rural Water Quality Programs (RWQP) for five more years. Each program offers grants of between 50 to 100 per cent to landowners for projects that improve and protect water quality.

Forestry specialists from the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) will lead a free farm tour to demonstrate how trees can add value and reduce costs for farming operations.

Registration is open now through Eventbrite for this free event – entitled Twilight Tour: Trees Working for your Farm - which will run at a New Hamburg-area farm from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is continuing a comprehensive rehabilitation project of the Conestogo Dam. This project is a continuation of work completed on the dam over the last several years to repair normal damage caused by regular weather and ice events.

The GRCF is offering three scholarships in 2024 for post-secondary students enrolled in an environmental field of study.
