Updates to the plan that protects the sources of municipal drinking water in the Grand River watershed have been approved by the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) announced on Friday.

Work on the dike and river channel along the Grand River downstream of Veterans Memorial Bridge in Brantford is expected to get underway on Monday, August 19^th and will take approximately 4 weeks to complete. The project began in the fall of 2018 and is about 75% complete. Periodic high river levels and ice conditions along the river resulted in delays due to limited accessibility.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) will be hosting the first Public Information Centre for the New Hamburg Flood Mitigation Study on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the New Hamburg Community Hall (251 Jacob Street, New Hamburg).

Samantha Lawson has been appointed the new Chief Administrative Officer of the Grand River Conservation Authority. The announcement was made at the GRCA General Membership meeting on May 24, 2019 by GRCA Chair Helen Jowett.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is undertaking a Flood Mitigation Study for New Hamburg in Wilmot Township, thanks to a $90,000 grant from the federal National Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP). The NDMP grant will contribute up to 50 per cent of the project’s funding, with the remaining amount to be funded through the GRCA’s land sale reserves. The project is expected to cost approximately $180,000.

The Grand River Conservation Authority will be hosting two free workshops in June in Brant and Haldimand counties for rural landowners with properties larger than 2. 5 acres.

The fifth annual Haldimand Children’s Water Festival at the Grand River Conservation Authority’s (GRCA) Taquanyah Nature Centre will help 500 elementary school students splash their way to a better understanding of water: where it comes from, how we use it, and how we can protect and conserve it.

Based on reports provided by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) and consultation with Region of Waterloo Public Health, there is no risk associated with the jet fuel spill contamination at Shade’s Mills reservoir. This includes recreational activities such as fishing, boating and swimming.
